It was a short hiatus, just three weeks, which it seemed like we all earned it from 2020. Many lost loved ones, friends and acquaintances. We gained new terms and habits we never expected: lock-down, N95, underlying conditions, Moderna, Wuhan, and more. Now, though, we find ourselves on the verge of 400,000 deaths in the US from Coronavirus. We went from 200,000 to 300,000 in 12 weeks, 300,000 to 400,000 in five. They say this is attributable to the holidays and people gathering against all advice combined with the emerging new, more virulent strains. Again, we hear of hospitals at capacity, or worse, and this is the hopeful 2021? On January 6 a violent mob stormed the US Capitol. Are we not the country of peaceful protest?

Yes, it was a short hiatus, but that is a good thing, too, because those upbeat things we closed the year with are still here. Tomorrow, we will have a peaceful transfer of power. What might the last three weeks highlight for us all? What words might we want to purge from our collective knowledge? Can we strive for a return to what our founding fathers envisioned, citizen legislators? Maybe we can purge partisanship from the vernacular. Maybe citizen legislators would think for themselves, represent their constituents, and ‘do the right thing’ instead of tow the party line. How about remembering the words civility and civil discourse? All these seem like wildly aspirational goals, but is that not what we should be looking to achieve? When did citizen legislators become career politicians? How do we move in the right direction?  

In memoriam: it is with great sadness that we said good-bye to Muffy during the holiday break. She was a great companion through good times and bad, especially so during the past year of pandemic lockdowns. She, like those before her, will be dearly missed.
